GS:
How did you get started in your current line of work?
RG:
I began speaking through formal training sessions with the people in my network marketing organization.
GS:
What were the 3 biggest obstacles you had to overcome?
RG:
Belief, belief, and belief. Believing in yourself is what it all goes back to. If you doubt yourself, wonder if you're worthy or if you don't really believe you can make it or deserve to make it, then you won't. Even though you are working for yourself trying to reach that goal, people still have subconscious programming; which tells you that you don't deserve it. You must overcome that conscious doubt and subconscious doubt. Once you do that, along with dismissing fear, you can then just sail through the process and succeed.
GS:
The famous book As a Man Thinketh by James Allen tells us when we "Conquer doubt and fear.we conquer failure." Let me ask you. What is the biggest thing you do to help you conquer doubt and fear?
RG:
I do affirmations with visualizations. Every morning, first thing when I get up, I do affirmations with visualizations, and then program myself with only positive things. I don't read the newspaper first thing in the morning or watch the news before bed at night. I read something positive like As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen at night and I listen to subliminal tapes while I sleep to help program my subconscious. It is definitely a twenty-four hour a day process to keep out the negative. Negativity is in, like, ninety-nine percent of the TV. You watch the movies you see, the newspapers you read, people you talk to, most of these things are programming you with lack and limiting messages. Therefore, I am always working to counteract all that negative. In the mornings I do my cardio workout - either jogging or riding my bike. That's my time to pray and ask for guidance as well as give thanks for the skills, talents and abilities God has given me. I affirm in my prayers even, that in order to be a vessel for God's work, I have to use those assets he has given me for the highest good and without doubt. If I doubt myself, I am doubting God because God gave me those abilities. I affirm those gifts by choosing to use them for the highest good and accepting the greatness God has set for me.
GS:
What 2 books have influenced you the most? Why?
RG:
The first is As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen. I believe that has to be the greatest book written in the past two hundred years. It focuses on the fact and makes you realize that outside factors are not what holds you back from success. You can blame everything, from your partner to the economy, company to government, for your failed success; but the methods of that book blow all those excuses out of the water. You learn that you control your thoughts, your thoughts control your actions, and your actions control your life. If you want to change the world, you first change your thoughts; which changes you and that changes everything. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a great book, as well as Dynamic Laws of Prosperity, by Katherine Ponder. Reverend Ponder told me two things in her book that transformed my life. The first was that God wanted me to be wealthy, which was incredible to me. I had never heard such a thing. I came from an atheist household that never related to the positive side of church or religion, because I never saw spirituality. I only heard of religion and I certainly didn't know the distinction between that and spirituality. That was just due to the lack of programming that applies to most people. The second thing she stated was that my thought could be an instrument for poverty or prosperity. That statement was a breakthrough for me.
GS:
What is your greatest Bill Gove story you could share with our readers?
RG:
I was conducting my first or second Speaker's Institute when I met a guy who was speaking, who knew Bill. He told me that he had heard Bill was in town doing a program. Well, he had gone to the presentation and said, "Let me tell you guys a Bill Gove story." He told a story of years ago when he and Bill did a program together. He and Bill were both speakers sitting in the front row while the president of that company gave the opening keynote. Well, this company was facing budget cuts because their sales were down. The president was threatening to take company cars and cut bonuses, not to mention laying off some employees. If you guys don't get it together we will slash the work force, etc. Being the opening speech, the audience was left a little distraught. Next, they introduced Bill as second keynote. After the applause died down, Bill looked over into the side wing where the president had exited. He paused, scanned, and nodded as only Bill Gove can do, then gazed over there again and said, "Who was that son of a *#&$@?" The whole crowd burst into an uproar! No matter what he says, Bill always captures the audience. He figured after that, he probably wouldn't get paid for that gig, but he didn't care. He felt that the people had been beaten down so badly, they needed someone to build them up again. So, that's what he did. Later, we found out he did get paid for it, but he would have gladly given up that fee to do what was right for the audience. That tells you as much as you would ever want to know about Bill Gove.
GS:
You have already made your first million. What advice can you give the rest of us who may still be looking to make our first million?
RG:
I would say, you have to have control of your process. Remember 99% of your surroundings are negative, so you have got to take control of your programming. Don't wake up and read the paper. Don't go to bed watching the news. Read the Bible or the Koran. Pick up a book like As A Man Thinketh or one of the books I spoke of earlier. Start and end your day with something positive to program your mind. Choose what you allow into your thought process, and that will change your thoughts and your results.
GS:
How importantly would you rank mental toughness and the ability to communicate as it relates to your success and why?
RG:
It is the most important factor in success. You have got to be tough enough to believe in yourself, even when the whole world seems to be against you. It is also accepting the greatness your Creator has set for you. You must overcome the world suppressing you into thinking you should struggle to get by in life and be poor or unhappy. You have to be tough enough to realize that all those types of thoughts and ideas are superficial or surface stuff. If you see past that and persevere, the real proof will appear. The truth is you have a rich, heavenly Father who wants you to have the Kingdom.
GS:
If you had to start over again.what would you NOT do again?
RG:
First, I wouldn't change a thing. I have been shot, I have been an addict, been in a robbery and gone to jail; I've done all kinds of bad things, but no, I wouldn't change it. I believe that all of those things happened to teach me a lesson. Those bumps were steps I needed to take in becoming the person I am today. I never second-guess a thing. If I could have added something to my life, it would have been the programming. I would have started the positive programming at least ten years earlier.
GS:
What is the reason most people don't achieve their major goals and dreams?
RG:
People buy into the superficial evidence as I mentioned, so they mentally give up the fight before it even begins. Most people just do not have the confidence to believe in themselves.
GS:
Who were your role models/mentors, and what was it that you saw in them?
RG:

As a speaker - Bill Gove - the way he connects with his audiences. Another person would be Jim Cathcart, who has a very natural and honest connection with people. Claude Hopkins and John Kaples were both ad people in marketing from forty, even fifty years ago, who I find as good mentors. I have studied all of their stuff and have really enjoyed and learned from it. These men all understand the need for marketing. They hold their integrity at a high merit, which also means they put their reputations on the line each time. Staying within their bounds of integrity is so important to their credibility, not only in marketing, but also in speaking. Putting integrity in that light is what has made each of these men so respected.
